Fast Track to Career Development: Mentoring

A new job, a new organisation, a new community. An adventure, a challenge, a great new life style!

The MentoringWorks Allied Health Program is funded by the Department of Health and forms part of the Victorian Allied Health Workforce Recruitment and Retentions Projects. Participation in the Allied Health Mentoring Program is recognised as CPD hours.

To be eligible to participate in this program, allied health workers must have taken up positions in publicly funded health care organisations and/or community services in rural and remote areas of Victoria.

Mentoring is about YOU gaining access to confidential support, career counselling specific to your situation and skills that will impact all aspects of your work life such as:

  • New interpersonal skills, increased confidence and job satisfaction
  • Change Management and conflict resolution
  • Career management and career planning

Mentoring can you increase your skills as a health professional thereby enabling you to deliver a better service to your clients.  Mentoring can help you learn to transform potentially win/lose scenarios into a fully participatory exercise that meets the needs of all concerned.  Mentoring can help you tak control of your career and gain greater clarity about where you are going.

How the program works

Our conceptual model is based on extensive research and consultation. Our practice is investigative, flexible and informed by adult learning principles and action learning.

Mentoring is a strategic holistic relationship between two or more people to encourage inquiry, explore options, encourage innovation and support action in both personal and professional life. The MentoringWorks program is influenced by Appreciative Inquiry - a strength based approach.

How do I get matched with a mentor?

When you register for this program, you will be required to answer some questions to assist us in determining your needs.  Based on the information you supply, we will match according to your location, career stage and expectations of a mentoring relationship. This program follows mentoring best practice of not matching mentors and mentees from the same discipline to ensure the relationship does not fall into clinical supervision.

How long is the mentoring program?

The program will run for a period of 6 months and will require approximately 16 hours over six months. This includes mentoring sessions and Learning Circles. Most mentoring relationships meet between 6-8 times.

1 x 3hr Learning Circle 4 weeks post initial match (includes one hour mentoring session)

1 x 3hr Learning Circle 16 weeks post initial match (includes one hour mentoring session)

1 x 6hr Learning Circle finalising the program (includes one hour mentoring session)

Where do I meet with my mentor?

We encourage face to face meetings with your mentor for the first two-three sessions. This assists in building rapport and trust within the relationship. Thereafter meetings can incorporate technology such as email, video conference, skype or phone. Arrangement on where and how to meet will be decided between yourself and your mentor to fit in with your respective schedules.

What are Learning Circles?

The learning circles are meetings attended by mentors and mentees participating in this program from your region.  Half the meeting is dedicated to professional development topics such as time management, team work, conflict resolution and storytelling.   The remaining time is a chance for networking and face-to-face mentoring sessions with your mentor.
