MentoringWorks: A mentoring program for all allied health workers across all levels.

The evidence based model will introduce new skills to mentors and new approaches to the mentoring process. While the traditionalone-to-one relationship will be present, Learning Circles will be the core of the model.

Feedback from previous participants of this program indicates mentors gain as much as the mentees and increase their own career satisfaction and potential.

This 6 month program requires two days initial training followed by approx 16 hours over 6 months for the mentoring relationship, all of which can be claimed as CPD hours. Explicit goals and boundaries will be set between yourself and your mentee. You will provide mentoring, NOT clinical supervision. Mentoring is about providing confidential support, career counselling specific to your mentee’s situation and skills that will impact all aspects of their work life such as new interpersonal skills, increased confidence and job satisfaction.

Shape the Future: Become a Mentor

  • Gain new skills and knowledge
  • Be at the cutting edge
  • Contribute to the health care capacity of your community
  • Develop your own leadership skills and capacity

MentoringWorks has developed a mentoring program for allied health workers in rural communities. Funded by the Department of Human Services, this mentoring program is designed to increase recruitment and retention. The evidence based model will introduce new skills to mentors and new approaches to the mentoring process. While the traditional one to one relationship will be present, Mentoring Circles will be the core of the model.

Research on mentoring indicates that mentors gain as much as the mentees and increase their own career satisfaction and potential.

This program will provide fundamental skills for mentors including:

  • Utilising Adult Learning and Communication modes
  • Applying Appreciative Inquiry
  • Using Reflective Practice
  • Facilitating mentoring circles
  • Building a mentoring relationship
  • In addition to the one-to-one relationship, Learning Circles offer opportunities to network and learn around specific topics

Who should participate?

  • Any allied health worker at a publicly funded hospital and/or community health service who wants to make a difference by supporting another clinician with their experience
  • Clinical Supervisors (for non clinical aspects)
  • Anyone who wants to learn how to support someone in an evidence based and positive mentoring relationship

What is the time commitment needed for the mentoring program?

The program will require approximately 16 hours over six months which includes a two day mentoring training workshop, mentoring sessions with your mentee and Learning Circles. Most mentoring relationships meet between 6—8 times. Below is the indicative timing for the Learning Circles.

1 x 3hr Learning Circle 4 weeks post initial match (includes one hour mentoring session)

1 x 3hr Learning Circle 16 weeks post initial match (includes one hour mentoring session)

1 x 6hr Learning Circle finalising the program (includes one hour mentoring session)
